Cattle were again a much wanted commodity at the WELLSFORD prime cattle and sheep sale on Tuesday, Pallister said.
Steers: heavy $2.10-$2.16kg/LW, medium $2.02-$2.08kg/LW. Heifers: heavy $1.74-$1.82kg/LW, medium $1.85-$1.89 kg/LW. Cows: heavy $1.55-$1.74kg/LW, medium $1.21-$1.36kg/LW, light $1-$1.20kg/LW. Bulls: heavy $2.12-$2.19kg/LW.
All sheep prices continue to be strong with no drop off in sight, Pallister said.

Store lambs: heavy $67-$70 a head, medium $61-$64, small $39-$49. Cull ewes: heavy $75-$78, medium $53 to $63, light $35-$40.
The market at KAIKOHE on Wednesday was much the same as the previous week with about 600 head, many crossbred, for sale, PGG Wrightson agent Vaughan Vujcich said.
The best of the steers made $1.95-$1.96/kgLW with lesser types fetching $1.75-$1.85/kgLW. Smaller R1 beef steers $2-$2.20/kgLW. Yearling Friesians, beef and exotic cross bulls made $2-$2.15/kgLW, 2-year beef-cross heifers $1.75-$1.80/kgLW, yearling beef heifers $1.80-$1.90/kgLW.

AUCKLAND
The cattle market at PUKEKOHE on Saturday June 19 continued on very strong recent trends with big steers fetching to $1830, heifers $1105 and cows $1100.
Demand is very strong at present with good buyer numbers making for keen bidding.
Young cattle in particular are selling exceptionally well compared to sales in some areas which have struggled recently.
The market has a very positive feel to it but this can be very weather dependent at this time of year.
Cattle: best steers $1070-$1830, medium crossbred steers $630-$880, small 15-month steers $515-$550, medium crossbred weaner steers $370-$410, other crossbred weaner steers $300-$388.
Best prime heifers $850-$1105, other heifers $560-$650, very light crossbred heifers $430-$500, medium weaner heifers $340-$402, small crossbred heifers $288-$330, boner cows $552-$1100, light cows $410.
With a mainly very average yarding in terms of quality at KUMEU last Monday, the sale was more subdued than usual with buyers keener to talk about the All Whites and All Blacks results than to focus on cattle.
While some cattle sold well enough the end result was probably another draw, both vendors and buyers feeling they had lost.
Cattle: very light crossbred 2-year steers $480-500, crossbred weaner steers $348, light prime heifers $740, light crossbred 15-month heifers $500-$510, medium weaner heifers $318-$360, small crossbred heifers $290-$320, very light cows $318.
Sheep: fat lambs $99-$107, other lambs $37-$72, ewes $60.

COUNTIES
Thursday's store cattle sale at TUAKAU was a cold and wet affair but quality steers and heifers sold at similar rates to the previous week, PGG Wrightson agent Roy Allen said.
However, lesser quality animals in the yarding of around 700 were much harder to sell.
Thirty-month whitehead steers at 530kg traded at $1.87/kgLW or $990 with R2 whitehead steers 435-478kg making $1.96-$2.01/kgLW or $810-$950. Allen said prices at last Wednesday's prime sale were on a par with the previous week although some of the yarding of almost 500 head lacked finish because of the hard season.
Extra heavy prime steers 750-885kg traded at $1.96-$2.13/kgLW or $1569-$1739 with 600-670kg steers returning $2.03-$2.17/kgLW and 530-585kg steers $2.00-$2.15/kgLW. Lighter steers were discounted by 5-10c/kgLW.

WAIKATO
Wintery conditions are putting a damper on markets, reported Cam Heggie of Allied Farmers after a very small store sale at FRANKTON on Wednesday.
Top quality cattle were okay but for lesser sorts it was a case of ho-hum, he said.
Good heavy older steers sold at $995-$1220, $2-$2.18/kgLW while R2 steers weighing 400-480kg sold at $805-$945, $1.91-$1.99/kgLW. Smaller steers the same age tended to sell at $2/kgLW for better sorts, making up to $770 but lesser lots fetched $620, $1.68/kgLW.
The best of the R1 steers made to $620, selling from $530 at $1.58-$1.92/kgLW. A pen of 413kg R2 heifers made $745 at $1.80/kgLW and 350-400kg heifers brought $585-$770, $1.65-$1.98/kgLW.

POVERTY BAY
It was an early lunch at MATAWHERO on Friday as continuing wet weather contributed to a much reduced offering of just 1310 sheep.
Store lamb values appreciated, the short numbers no doubt contributing to the rise though there was nothing dramatic about that.
Top price of $81.20 was paid for a small line of mixed sex lambs and 200 attractive wether lambs, three weeks off-shears, brought $78.50 at $2.53/kgLW.
The final bid was $75.50 for 102 male lambs, one of only two lines to exceed 100 head. They were weighed at 28kg and made $2.69/kgLW. A couple of small lots of ewe lambs made $68 and $54.
A decent entry of prime ewes regained the ground they lost the previous week with quality and weight very good and these top ewes sold at $$90-$92.50. Good medium weight made $80-$89 and plainer ewes, $77.50.
Just 331 breeding ewes were offered. Good useful 5-year ewes, scanned-in-lamb, made $82 and bulky 4th/6th ewes, RWR sold at $84.

Store ewes followed the prime sheep values, making $59-$69.

HAWKE'S BAY
Store lamb values lifted a shade at STORTFORD LODGE on Wednesday where a much reduced yarding of just over 4000 was offered.
Some of the lambs are showing the effects of wet and cold weather though many lines had reasonable body weights.
It would appear sheer shortage triggered the lift in prices per kilogram.
A small line of heavy, mixed sex lambs topped the sale at $100, $2.32/kgLW but no other lots made more than $88.
Good medium lambs were bought for $80-$87.50 with some selling at $2.31-$2.49/kgLW.
The lighter lambs, those weighing less than 30 kg, made the most per kilogram. Ewe lambs in this category fetched $2.53-$2.84/kgLW to sell for $63-$74 but mixed sex were easier at $2.29-$2.49/kgLW.
In-lamb ewes are still popular. A line of six-year ewes, scanned 172%, made $102 and similar five-year ewes $93. RWR ewes made $69-$80 according to quality.
A short offering of 400 cattle was taken up by mainly local buyers and prices were generally pleasing as was the overall condition of the cattle.
R2 steers are in demand and most lots achieved more than $2/kgLW. Two good lines weighing close to 500kg fetched $1000-$1030, $2.04-$2.06/kgLW while $1055 was paid for 503kg South Devons at $2.10/kgLW. $805-$930 was needed to buy Angus or Angus cross lots, $2.02-$2.17/kgLW and Hereford/Friesian-crosses fetched $800-$852, $1.93-42.17/kgLW.
R1 steers also sold freely. Good lines over 200kg traded at $600-$615, $2.31-$2.56/kgLW. In fact, all lots made better than $2.18/kgLW and up to $2.61/kgLW.
Good medium steers made $472-$555 and plainer went at $375. The two pens of R3 steers put up sold at $1035 and $1152, $1.97-$2.11/kgLW. Fewer than 30 R2 heifers were offered and the best, 426kg Hereford-Friesian made $780 at $1.83/kgLW and a couple of pens of Hereford heifers fetched $725 and $548 at $2.14-$1.84/kgLW. R1 heifers weighing 200kg and above made $455-$530 at $2.08-$2.36/kgLW and those under 200kg brought $250-$425, $1.79-$2.35/kgLW.
