AUCKLAND
The market for killable cattle is very strong at PUKEKOHE and looks set to continue with steers making to $1580 and heifers $1325 on Saturday June 26.
The surprise was the easing of interest in younger cattle on previous weeks.
Weaner steers and heifers were down slightly in price despite good quality stock on offer.
However, before this sale prices have been exceptionally good in contrast to many other sales.
Cattle: best prime steers $1250-$1580, other good steers $1025-$1130, medium crossbred steers $558-$745, medium weaner steers $410-$440, small crossbred steers $270-$365, best prime heifers $968-$1325, light crossbred heifers $790, medium 15-month heifers $455-$578, weaner heifers $338-$355, small heifers $268-$325, boner cows $462-$745.
A pleasant winter's day saw a good bench of buyers at the KUMEU sale last Monday but most seemed to have come for the lunch.
There was some good buying to be had in places but also some cattle sold very well indeed, especially small whiteface weaner heifers which made $345.
The older or killable cattle are selling well and as spring draws closer the demand will grow for the younger cattle.
Cattle: medium 2-year steers $742-$965, small weaner steers $272-$378, 15-month heifers $630, medium weaner heifers $345, small crossbred bulls $250.
