26-07-2010 | Not Specified

NORTHLAND
Mixed breed cattle dominated the smallest yarding of the year at KAIKOHE on Wednesday but what was there sold well, Vaughan Vujcich of PGG Wrightson said.
Prices for yearling heifers, which had been struggling, lifted.
Charolais-Belgian Blue 2-year steers $1.90-$1.94/kgLW, yearling beef steers $2-$2.10/kgLW, heavy yearling beef-cross bulls $2/kgLW, lighter yearling beef-cross bulls $2.40/kgLW, 2-year beef-cross heifers $1.82-$1.90/kgLW, yearling Angus heifers $2.18/kgLW, other yearling heifers down to $1.85/kgLW, boner cows $1.40-$1.55/kgLW.
Big cattle sold extremely well with more buyers in the market than expected for this
time of the year at WELLSFORD on Monday, PGG Wrightson agent Grant Pallister said.
Three-year steers 500-550kg, $2.01-$2.05/kgLW, 2-year steers 420-480kg, $1.96-$2.04/kgLW, 350-400kg, $1.96-$2.07/kgLW, 250-300kg, $1.70-$1.98/kgLW, 2-year heifers 450-470kg, $1.98-$2.03/kgLW, 280-320kg, $1.36 to $1.83/kgLW, 1-year steers 200-250kg, $1.99-$2.41/kgLW, 110-140kg, $3.10-$3.32/kgLW, 1-year bulls 140-220kg, $1.86-$2.32/kgLW, 1-year heifers 200-240kg, $1.92-$2.01/kgLW, 100-130kg $2 to $2.64/kgLW.
The numbers of prime cattle on offer on Tuesday made it hardly worth holding a sale, Pallister said.
Heavy heifers $1.81-$1.96/kgLW, medium $1.96-$2kg/LW. Heavy cows $1.42-$1.53/kgLW, medium $1.18-$1.27/kgLW, light $0.87-$1.07/kgLW.
There were fewer store lambs up for sale but the market was red hot for them. The prime lamb market was still strong, Pallister said.
Heavy prime lambs $103-$119, medium $84-$98, light $74-$79. Heavy store lambs $70-$72, medium $60-$64, small $51-$52. Heavy cull ewes $65-$80, medium $52-$60, light $20-$42.

AUCKLAND
A good number of quality store cattle were on offer at PUKEKOHE on July 17 and sold well, with heifers to $720 and R1 steers to $550, Chris Humphrey of Livestock Mart Auctions said.
The market continues strongly along on the fat cattle, with fewer on offer. The market for store cattle of lesser breeding is certainly more difficult but will improve strongly once grass starts to grow.
Two-year steers $895, 1-year steers $465-$550, weaner steers $352-$402, medium prime heifers $780-$900, good store heifers $665-$720, other store heifers $520-$640, weaner heifers $295-$380, boner cows $710-$750.
With not a lot of cattle on offer the market was reasonable at KUMEU last Monday, Chris Humphrey of Livestock Mart Auctions said.
Notable was the lack of enthusiasm for poorer quality stock as buyers are becoming very choosy. A pen of nice but small 15-month steers sold well to $570 as did some weaner heifers to $378.
Cattle: small 15-month steers $570, R1 steers $460-$490, weaner heifers $320-$378, weaner bulls $270-$360, cows$300.
Sheep: fat lambs $79-$106, store lambs $29-$44, ewes $68-$70.

COUNTIES
Only 200 cattle were yarded at TUAKAU last Thursday but a larger than usual bench of buyers ensured good competition, PGG Wrightson agent Roy Allen said.
Thirty-month whitehead steers 480kg sold at $1.95/kgLW or $940 and Friesian steers 544kg made $1.70/kgLW. Lighter 30-month whitehead steers 350-380kg traded at $1.96-$2.08/kgLW and 20-month whiteheads at 336kg earned $2.15/kgLW. Prices for the two pens of R1 whitehead steers were $80-$100 stronger than the previous week with 201kg steers returning $590 and 189kg steers $580.
Allen said the 20-month heifer market was also up by 10-20c/kgLW with whitehead heifers 400-410kg making $1.90-$1.96/kgLW and 330-350kg types $2-$2.08/kgLW. Yearling whitehead heifers at 193kg earned $475.
The yarding at last Wednesday's prime sale was also small with just 350 on offer but Allen said the market remained firm.
Heavy steers 700-800kg traded at $2.09-$2.15/kgLW and 630-680kg steers made $2.13-$2.18/kgLW. Charolais-cross steers at 687kg fetched $2.18/kgLW with other types at 580-620kg earning $2.05-$2.10/kgLW. Friesian steers lacking finish at 620-640kg sold at $1.97-$1.99/kgLW and a small number of trade-type steers made $1.97-$2.02/kgLW.
A lack of quality meant heifer prices were back on the previous week. Heifers at 500-530kg traded at $1.97-$2/kgLW with exotic heifers at 454kg returning $2.02/kgLW and others $1.93-$1.97/kgLW. The best of the empty Friesian heifers 480kg made $1.74/kgLW.
Beef cows 530-600kg traded at $1.46-$1.52/kgLW and lighter cows at $1.20-$1.35/kgLW. Heavy empty Friesian cows 500kg-plus returned $1.53-$1.62/kgLW and boners at 420-470kg made $1.35-$1.41/kgLW. An 835kg Angus bull sold at $1.99/kgLW and 635kg Hereford-cross bulls at $2.10/kgLW.
Around 1200 prime lambs were offered at last Monday's sheep sale and Allen said these lambs drew good competition. The best made $110-$130 with the next cut making $95-$105 and lighter lambs $85-$90.
Store lamb prices were slightly softer. Good shorn ewe lambs sold at $62-$87 and woolly wethers made $62-$72. Shorn blackface mixed-sex lambs earned $50-$77 and RWR ewes "looked good buying" at $50-$60. Heavy prime ewes sold up to $84 with lighter sorts making $30-$40.

BAY OF PLENTY
There was a sound market with no great changes in value for a relatively small offering at RANGIURU, Neill Penman of PGG Wrightson said.
Most of the heavier steers and heifers continue to sell to $2/kgLW and better while plainer sorts range between $1.90-$1.96kgLW. Cows with weight are making $1.30-$1.94/kgLW and low yielding lots, $0.96-$1/kgLW. R3 steers over 480kg brought $905-$1115, $1.87-$2.06/kgLW and 400-480kg lots realized $810-$845, $1.88-$1.94/kgLW.
Good yearling steers weighing just over 120kg made $390-$435, $2.73-$3.10/kgLW. A small line of 525kg heifers traded at $1050, $2/kgLW and another 472kg pen fetched $960, $2.03/kgLW. R2 heifers in the 400-480kg range brought $577-$725 according to quality, $1.54-$1.89/kgLW, while slightly smaller made $305-$608, $1.01-$2/kgLW.
Most bulls were below 350kg and the better ones sold at $400-$565, $1.19-$1.75/kgLW and others made $280-$330m $1-17-$2.01/kgLW. The heavier boner cows varied from $500-$1100, $0.96-$1.94/kgLW with those over 400kg making $560-$700, $1.28-$1.64/kgLW and light going at $270-$530, $1-$1.61/kgLW.
Good prime lambs topped at $116, averaging $87, while good ewes made to $82.

WAIKATO
Small yardings are becoming the "norm" at FRANKTON as supplies dwindle and the entries on both days at were small said Lynn Collins of PGG Wrightson.

POVERTY BAY
Another day of full sunshine appeared to loosen the purses of store lamb buyers who were offered just 1145 head at MATAWHERO on Friday.
The better conditioned lambs sold well, fully firm to a shade stronger than the previous week and $79.50-$89 was needed to take lines in that class.
Only three pens held more than 100 lambs with many very small lines.
The meatier sorts tended to sell at $2.44-$2.50/kgLW and some middle-of-the road types went up to $2.86/kgLW.
Sex was not a factor as there were only three lines of males displayed, most of the rest being mixed sex.
A decent sized line of 250 high country ewe lambs did make $77.50-$78 and well covered ewe lambs were $76.50.
Small lambs made as little as $44-$66.
Prime ewes sold better because finish was better and they made $78-$80.25 for good and $73-$75.25 for others. $100 was paid for the only prime lambs penned.

HAWKE'S BAY
A small bench of local buyers competed for a small offering of cattle at STORTFORD LODGE and quality varied amongst the small lots penned, reported Ian MacEwan, Elders.

In the sheep section a much reduced entry of under 3500 store lambs, mainly medium style, brought quite good prices as signs of grass growth start to appear and the few breeding ewes displayed also attracted strong bidding. $81-$86.70 took useful male lambs with smaller sorts making $66-$76 and ewe lambs followed a similar pattern, the best making to $83 and others at $58-$68. Near-killable mixed sex fetched to $97, mediums $80 and smaller $50. Attractive five year Perendale ewes, scanned 151%, returned $$92 and similar Romney ewes, $88.50 and solid 4/5-year ewes RWR also drew a final bid of $88.

MANAWATU
Lamb prices improved on previous weeks at Feilding on Friday and lack of number might have contributed to the rise, PGG Wrightson agent Dan Flanagan said.
The quality of the offering was mostly second and third cuts.
The better top end lambs fetched $90 with Romney males making $92-$95.
Most of the yarding was in the early 30kg range or under so good lambs approaching 40kg sold very well.
The ewe market was not strong with a lack of feed not helping, Flanagan said.
The yarding was certainly down on previous weeks with good SIL ewes making $95 and medium and lesser types SIL $75-$80.
