Small yardings but good prices

NORTHLAND
A firm market with strong demand competed for a light yarding of about 350 head of cattle at KAIKOHE, PGG Wrightson agent Vaughan Vujcich said.
The bests of the 2-year Angus steers made up to $2.20/kgLW. Among the yearling steers Charolais made to $2.45/kgLW and whitehead to $2.65/kgLW and 2-year whiteface bulls made to $1.90/kgLW.
Among the 2-year heifers heavy Simmental-cross made to $2.10/kgLW and Angus and Hereford-cross around $2.
Yearling Hereford and whiteface beef heifers made $2.10-$2.25 mainly but one line of lighter yearling whiteface heifers made $3/kgLW.
Friesian and beef-cross empty cows made $1.45-$1.55/kgLW.
Wellsford Selling Centre
Last Monday's was a very small sale at WELLSFORD because of the grown cattle fair being held at Wellsford today but the market remained consistent, PGG Wrightson agent Grant Pallister said.
Two-year steers 380-400kg $1.95-$1.99/kgLW, 1-year steers 130-170kg $2.44-$2.49/kgLW, 1-year Friesian bulls 190-200kg $2.26-$2.55/kgLW, 1-year heifers 120-140kg $1.96-$2.75/kgLW.
Prime steers and trade cattle sold exceptionally well at WELLSFORD on Tuesday after lifts in schedules for the week.
Heavy steers $2.14-$2.18/kgLW, medium $2.06-$2.13/kgLW, heavy heifers $2.02-$2.08 kg/LW, medium $1.85-$1.97/kgLW, heavy cows $1.47-$1.68/kgLW, medium $1.18-$1.28/kgLW, light $0.86-$1/kgLW, medium bulls $1.95/kgLW.
Store lambs jumped in price from the previous two weeks in the sheep sale.
Heavy prime lambs $103-$115 per head, medium $90-$94, light $75-$85. Heavy store lambs $70-$77, medium $50-$55, small $37-$48. Heavy cull ewes $68, medium $53, light $40.
AUCKLAND
The market at PUKEKOHE was very strong on July 31 with lifting schedules and a feel of spring in the air.
Best steers made to $1330 and heifers $1045.
As predicted months ago, a real shortage of quality store cattle has eventuated and throughout the country demand is high and looks set to improve more yet, Chris Humphrey of Livestock Mart Auctions said.
Prime steers $1135-$1330, medium 2-year steers $835-$880, medium 15-month steers
$585-$665, prime heifers $1045, other good heifers $740-$800, good R1 heifers $500, very small crossbred heifers $100-$312, boner cows $435-$550.
A lovely mild winter's day saw a large crowd of buyers present at KUMEU and a lot of enthusiasm to buy due to good recent growing conditions and general buoyancy in the cattle market, Humphrey said.
Medium 2-year steers $908, 15-month steers $460-$535, medium R1 steers $440-$460, weaner steers $205-$418, medium 15-month heifers $592, weaner bulls $305-$450.
Store lambs $41-$76, ewes $29-$65.
COUNTIES
Prices for a medium-sized yarding of 450 cattle remained firm at TUAKAU on Thursday, PGG Wrightson agent Roy Allen said.
Buyer competition was strong considering the very inclement weather in the days preceding the sale.
Three-year whitehead steers weighing around 495kg sold at $1.92-$1.96/kgLW and three-year Friesian steers at the same weight earned $1.69/kgLW, 3-year Hereford-cross steers, 380-450kg, made $1.86-$1.91/kgLW. Two-year whitehead steers at 377-430kg returned $2/kgLW or $755-$860 and even prices for lighter crossbred steers were firmer at around $2/kgLW, 16-month whitehead steers at 372kg made $2.17/kgLW or $810 and yearling whiteheads, 204-237kg, made $560-$580. Murray Grey yearlings at 170kg earned $545 and Hereford-cross yearling steers at 243kg returned $590. R1 steers, 125-134kg, sold well at $470-$495. One-year Friesian bulls, 244kg, traded at $1.88/kgLW and 184kg bulls made $2/kgLW. Allen said 90kg autumn-born Friesian bulls were "good buying" at $290.
In the heifer section, two-year Simmental heifers at 388kg fetched $1.97/kgLW and good quality 16-month whitehead heifers at 397kg made $1.99/kgLW. Yearling heifer prices were also strong with 180-250kg whiteheads making $530-$590 and quality Angus-Friesian heifers, 208-243kg, earning $450-$530. Autumn-born heifers at 92kg made $360.
Last Wednesday's TUAKAU prime sale drew another light yarding of 350 cattle. Prices for heavy steers were similar to the previous week, with 630-670kg steers trading at $2.09-$2.15/kgLW. But the market for lighter steers at 520-580kg was firmer at $2.05-$2.10/kgLW.
Allen said prime heifer prices rose in line with schedule increases. Some 530kg whitehead heifers made $2.14/kgLW or $1136 and 440-470kg heifers earned $2.07-$2.12/kgLW. Quality Angus heifers at 520kg went for $2.22/kgLW. The boner cow market was also firm. Heavy Friesian cows, 510-580kg, traded at $1.50-$1.57/kgLW with the next cut making $1.35-$1.40/kgLW.
BAY OF PLENTY
"The smallest sale ever," was how PGG Wrightson agent Stu Langdon described last Tuesday's fixture at RANGIURU.
Just 125 cattle were penned in very wet, muddy conditions. Values were generally steady for the older cattle with solid R3 steers making to $1485, $2.19/kgLW and the few R2 steers fetched $730-$885, $1.90-$2.11/kgLW. Steers weighing better than 150 kg made $470-$495, $2.59-$2.64/kgLW.
Buyers were keen on four-day calves .Good whiteface steers made to $143 and similar heifers went at $105 while the best of the Friesian bull calves made to $90. Only 39 boner cows went through the ring with one 677kg animal selling at $1105, $1.63/kgLW and most of the rest returned $1.25-$1.58/kgLW.
Sheep were also few in numbers. Prime lambs made to $114 and averaged $104 for 136 head while ewes made $40-$67, a similar number penned.
WAIKATO
Ox and prime heifers sold well at the FRANKTON prime sale and boner prices were also steady for the better sorts.
Small yardings seem to be the usual at present, assisting the price.
All beef cross ox fetched $2.10-$2.18/kgLW, the heavier lines over 600kg selling at$1359-$1459 and 550-590kg lines made $1195-$1289 while 635kg Friesians went at $1168, $1.84/kgLW. Jersey ox 465kg made $744, $1.60/kgLW. The best heifers weighing 520-600kg brought $1118-$1248, $2.08-$2.15/kgLW and beef-cross heifers over 400kg sold at$850-$1034, $2.08-$2.15/kgLW.
Heavy prime cows over 600kg returned $1074-$1106, $1.58-$1.69/kgLW and 476kg Friesian cows went at $839, $1.39/kgLW. Three lines of Hereford bulls all went at $2.14-$2.15/kgLW to make $1397-$1551 and good boners realised $574-$614, $1.28-$1.39/kgLW, light boners made $380, $1.25/kgLW.
Heavy prime lambs drew good money, the best selling at $130, medium weights at $105 and lighter at $88. Good ewes went at $80 and store lambs $55-$80.
Rain and sodden paddocks are keeping yardings small reported Ian Thomson, Allied Farmers, but generally values are good to very good and yearling cattle are filling the most pens at auction.
Wednesday's FRANKTON store sale produced very good prices for that age group.
R1 steers 240kg topped at $730, $2.15/kgLW. Most of the rest in the class weighed under 200kg but still made $402-$480, $2.50-$3.09/kgLW and 254kg Friesians brought $520, $2.05/kgLW. $600 was paid for 312kg Hereford-cross R1 bulls $1.92/kgLW but all other lots fetched $2.01-$2.20/kgLW.
Friesian bulls sold very well to a high of $502, $2.32/kgLW, those weighing less than 200kg bringing $2.26-$2.85/kgLW, $385-$418. Only two lots of R3 steers were offered with one 533kg lot making $1140, $2.14/kgLW and the other, at 503kg, $935, $1.86/kgLW. Acouple of R2 steer lines both sold at $935, $1.98/kgLW and $2.14/kgLW while brindle R2 steers made $420, $1.56/kgLW.
R2 Friesian bulls sold at $785-$822, $1.97-$1.99/kgLW. R3 heifers with condition fetched $750-$875, $1.88-$2.22/kgLW and useful Friesian cows $800, $1.49/kgLW. $820 was offered for 398kg brindle R2 heifers, $2.04/kgLW and other medium R2 heifers made $540-$695, $1.99-$2.06/kgLW.
No yearling heifers weighed more than 182kg and the entire offering made $2.26-$2.48/kgLW, all selling between $335 and $415. Good feeder Friesian bull calves sold to $120, medium, $85 and small, $45. Best whiteface bull calves were $220, mediums $185 and small $120. Whiteface heifer calves made $120, $80 and $60.
POVERTY BAY
The timing was right for the sale of one of the largest offerings of cattle around the North Island for some time when more than 1700 head of mostly very good cattle went under the hammer at MATAWHERO.
The sale included nearly 600 R2 and R3 steers. These had breeding and were in fresh to forward condition with buyers from a wide range of North Island districts keen to get their hands on them.
Yearlings were also keenly sought with local farmers taking a fair percentage of the smallish offering.
An outstanding line of Devon R3 steers weighing over 600kg made $1310, an estimated $2.04/kgLW and other big framed steers fetched $1100-$1105, $2.15-$2.21/kgLW. All R2 steers returned over $2/kgLW, lines over 400kg bringing $2.04-$2.10.kgLW while slightly smaller steers were dearer at $2.20-$2.27/kgLW. Top price was $985 with other nice lines making $$920-$975 and good medium framed lots $830-$860.
The heaviest R2 steers, over 300kg, brought $710-$720, $2.22-$2.35/kgLW and Hereford/Devon cross 240-260 kg made $660-$705, $2.71/kgLW. Smaller steers 170-210kg sold at $565-$610, $2-$2.51/kgLW.
A star line of Angus R2 heifers made $815 at $1.94/kgLW and $655-$730 bought good framed lots, $1.92-$1.97/kgLW. Solid Charolais
R1 heifers topped at $527, $2.19/kgLW and $445-$480 secured medium heifers, $2.05-$2.22/kgLW. Few cows were yarded but avery heavy pen of 4-year cows, RWB, went at $960 and cows, VIC, fetched $820-$885. Useful R2 Friesian bulls made $800, $1.77/kgLW and R1 Angus-cross bulls returned #$682-$780, $2.13-$2.16/kg LW while Friesian bull calves made $350, $3.18/kgLW.
POVERTY BAY
With just 1255 sheep and bright sunshine it was another early lunch at MATAWHERO.
A few days of sun encouraged buyers into the store lamb market and they snapped up the 752 offered paying $92.50-$94.50 for the bigger lambs, $2.45-$2.46/kgLW.
Good medium ewe lambs, still in the wool, drew final bids of $75.50-$85.25, $2.43-$2.45/kgLW and smaller ewe lambs brought $70.
Few male lambs were offered, the best selling at $94.50 and others down to $80.
Mixed sex lots returned $68.70-$93 according to weight.
A good sized entry of prime lambs went at good rates, $130.50 paid for very heavy and $89.50-$96 for good average weights.
Trade ewes continue to sell well, the best making $90.50-$93 and lighter fetched $76-$86.
Average style ewes, scanned-in-lamb made $74-$81.50.

Prime cattle sold strongly but boner cattle fell back a bit at STRATFORD on Tuesday.

HAWKE'S BAY
Yearling cattle comprised about 90% of the 410 cattle through the ring at STORTFORD LODGE.
Just one outside buyer attended. Local farmers, encouraged by warmer weather, battled amongst themselves, with very good results for the vendors.
Quality and condition were very good according to Lawrence Redshaw of LI Redshaw Ltd and the depth of the inquiry can be judged by the fact that the entire offering of steers sold at $2.47-$2.97/kgLW.
Two nice lots of Angus/Angus-Hereford made $710 and $712. A few lighter ones sold at $525 but they were under 200kg. Breed did not matter too much as 259kg whitefacesteers went at $640, $2.27/kgLW and 258kg Charolais fetched $695, $2.69/kgLW.
Yearling heifers numbered 131 and sold just as well. Two top lots brought $570 and $580, $2.15-$2.31/kgLW while $455 was paid for 163kg Shorthorn heifers, $2.79/kgLW.
Yearling Friesian bulls made $560-$565, $1.91-$2.17/kgLW for cattle weighing 260-293kg and a pen of 170kg Shorthorn bulls made $460, $2.71/kgLW. Only two pens of R2steers were offered with 440kg Angus making $902, $2.05/kgLW and 373kg Angus selling at $790, $2.12/kgLW. R2 heifers VIC made $790 and an RWB lot sold at $618.
A yarding of 3500 store lambs, mostly ewe lambs, sold well. Ewes with lambs at foot were wanted and ewes scanned-in-lamb are still in demand.
A top line of heavy ewe lambs drew a final bid of $109.50 and several lines were $90-$94.70. Only light ewe lambs sold below $70. Best male lambs went to $97 while 30-35kg lots fetched $83-$87 and $79.60 was lowest offer for the class.
The ewes with lambs were rather light and the lambs mixed but at $58-$60 all-counted, they sold well. Some were available at $43-$47. Useful Romney type ewes, SIL made $65-$85 and others, SIL, fetched $64-$82.
MANAWATU
Strong demand meant good prices for both sheep and cattle at FEILDING on Friday.
The sale of 10,500 lambs and about 1000 ewes was very strong indeed and went well, PGG Wrightson agent Dan Flanagan said.
Better ewes, SIL 150%, reached $100. There were a lot of rough ewes in small lots but one good pen hit $97.
Of the hoggets better males were fetching $2.50-$2.60/kgLW which was on hell of a good result, Flanagan said.
A big percentage of the lambs now being offered are getting down in weight, around 30kg, showing the results of a lack of feed.
It was a very successful day at Feilding with everything selling well, he said.
And it boded well for the Feilding hogget fair on Wednesday when 20,000 head are expected to meet a solid market.
The cattle section also featured strong demand for an average yarding with not a lot of quality, PGG Wrightson agent Colin Waller said.
Two-year steers made to $2.28/kgLW.
Angus weaner steers around 200kg made $3.16/kgLW with more for lighter sorts. One lot of Hereford-Friesian made $3.65/kgLW.
"It's great money. There was a hell of a buzz," Waller said.
CANTERBURY
Medium lambs were up $3-$5 at the CANTERBURY PARK sale on Tuesday, PGG Wrightson livestock manager Shane Dickson said.
Ewe prices were also up in a strong sale with one exceptional line.
Prime steers were similar to last week and prime heifers jumped 5-10c/kgLW in a small yarding.
MID CANTERBURY
A smaller yarding of prime stock was offered at TINWALD resulting in prime lamb prices strengthening $6/head for heavy types and up to $20/head for lighter lambs, PGG Wrightson livestock representative Emmett Sparrow reported.
Top heavy prime lambs fetched up to $153 with good heavy types earning $120-$130, medium $110-$117 and lighter lambs $102-$109.
Heavy prime ewes lifted an average $10/head across the grades with the best of the heavy primes fetching up to $120 with good heavy sorts returning $90-$100, medium $70-$85 and lighter ewes $57-$65.
The store lamb market held firm on the previous week with good forward stores returning $78-$80 while lighter lambs sold from $65-$70.
SOUTH CANTERBURY
Store cattle values generally held firm on the previous sale with yearling heifers having a particularly good sale strengthening 10-15c/kg while yearling steers lifted 5c/kg at TEMUKA.
Prime stock prices generally held firm across all sectors especially on the larger yarding of prime lambs with adult butcher ewes pushing out $2/head, PGG Wrightson livestock manager Joe Higgins reported.
In the store cattle sale beef and dairy beef 2-year steers returned $725-$1035 (356-573kg) while 2-year heifers earned $530-$950 (289-487kg).
Yearling steers fetched $360-$690 (198-339kg) and the yearling heifers $330-$590 (196-298kg).
Store lambs had an average sale with forward lambs fetching $80-$87, medium types $68-$79 and smaller lambs $55-$65.
Good heavy prime lambs earned $125-$155 with an exceptional pen sale selling at $168.
Medium lambs returned $105-$124 and lighter lambs $90-$104.
The best of the one-shear ewes fetched $88-$109, medium $77-$85 and lighter ewes $60-$75.
Heavy adult butcher ewes returned $98-$130, medium $79-$95, light $70-$76 and stores $50-$67.
In the prime cattle sale steers 600-750kg earned $1.89-$2.05/kgLW, 480-600kg $1.87-$2.04/kgLW, 400-480kg $1.90-$1.98 and dairy types 500-620kg $1.75-$1.90/kgLW.
Heifers 500-600kg returned $1.87-$2.06/kgLW, 450-500kg $1.95-$2.06/kgLW, 380-400kg $1.61-$1.89/kgLW and dairy sorts 380-500kg $1.58-$1.90/kgLW.
Bulls 550-850kg realised $1.50-$1.81.lgLW.
Heavy beef cows 500-750kg returned $1.20-$1.42/kgLW, 400-500kg $1.15-$1.30/kgLW and dairy types 500-750kg $1.10-$1.32/kg LW with poorer sorts turning in 65c-$1.05/kgLW.
OTAGO
In a big yarding in all categories prime lambs and ewes sold on a par with the previous week at BALCLUTHA, PGG Wrightson agent Barry Osborne reported.
Heavy lambs $125-$135, medium $110-$123, light $90-$106. Good quality 2-tooths $86, medium $75, light $67.
Heavy ewes $88-$98, medium $78-$86, light $65-$76. Lower condition ewes $25-$40.
Heavy local trade rams $63, medium $55, light $35.
There was good demand in the store sheep section which featured the annual in-lamb ewe sale.
Top woolly lambs $96, medium $76, light $60. Top shorn lambs $80, medium $71.50, light 64. Tail end lambs $40.
Mixed age Romney ewes, SIL triplets, $136, capital stock mixed age Perendale ewes SIL $114-$139, capital stock 4-shear Perendale ewes SIL $107-$116, capital stock composite mixed age ewes SIL $114-$119. There were no store cattle.
SOUTHLAND
A medium yarding of prime cattle sold on a good market at LORNEVILLE on Tuesday.
