Chatham Islands lambs top sale

NORTHLAND
The market continued to strengthen across the board for a yarding of 450 cattle at KAIKOHE on Wednesday, PGG Wrightson agent Vaughan Vujcich said.
R3 Simmental-cross steers $2.16/kgLW, R2 whitehead steers $2.10/kgLW, Simmental-cross yearling steers $2.20-$2.30/kgLW, Angus yearling steers $2.55/kgLW, hand-reared Hereford-Friesian yearling steers $3.60/kgLW, 2-year Friesian bulls $2.05/kgLW, 2-year Charolais bulls $2.02/kgLW, yearling Friesian bulls $2.25/kgLW, beef bulls, Charolais and exotic-cross $2.20/kgLW, 2-year whiteface, Hereford-cross and Simmental-cross heifers $1.95-$2.05/kgLW, heavier Angus, whitehead and beef-cross heifers $2.05-$2.10/kgLW and lighter $2.20-$2.50/kgLW, beef-cross cows $1.50-$1.55, empty Friesian and beef-cross cows $1.40-$1.55/kgLW.
The WELLSFORD Spring Grown Cattle Fair last Monday was successful most of the cattle staying in the north and vendors walking away happy, PGG Wrightson agent Grant Pallister said.
Angus 2-year steers 450-500kg $2.10-$2.20/kgLW, 380-499kg $2.11-$2.18/kgLW, Hereford/Friesian 2-year steers 450-500kg $2.05-$2.07/kgLW, 340-420kg $2.09-$2.36/kgLW, exotic 2-year steers 400-480kg $2.05-$2.15/kgLW, Angus 2-year heifers 300-320kg $2.01-$2.05/kgLW, Hereford/Friesian 2-year heifers 360-420kg $2.06-$2.08/kgLW, 300-340kg $1.99-$2.06/kgLW, exotic 2-year heifers, 310-360kg $2.03-$2.08/kgLW.
There was a smaller yarding but all prime cattle were still in big demand at WELLSFORD on Tuesday.
Heavy steers $2.10-$2.14/kgLW, medium $2-$2.04/kgLW. Heavy heifers $2.11-$2.13/kgLW, medium $2.04-$2.08/kgLW. Heavy cows $1.56-$1.67/kgLW, medium $1.20-$1.27/kgLW, light $1.08-$1.13/kgLW.
Heavy prime lambs $92-$97, medium $78-$86, light $74-$77.
All classes of prime sheep were wanted, Pallister said. Heavy store lambs $63-$65, medium $55-$60, Heavy cull ewes $70-$81, light $40, ewes with lambs at foot $43-$50 all counted.
AUCKLAND
The market at PUKEKOHE on Saturday August 7 lifted considerably and cattle sold exceptionally well with good steers to $1610 and heifers $1125, Chris Humphrey of Livestock Mart Auctions said.
The store market probably saw the biggest lift with light 2-year steers making to $970 and light, rising 1-year heifers to $502.
The market will continue this strong tendency now as farmers look to restock and take advantage of high schedules to sell and with excellent early grass growth things are looking good, Humphrey said.
Cattle: best prime steers $1150-$1610, light 2-year steers $680-$970, light crossbred steers $500-$580, best prime heifers $1125, other 2-year heifers $745-$828, light/good quality R1 heifers $472-$502, light crossbred heifers $350-$400, cows $640-$645.
A large crowd of enthusiastic buyers at KUMEU on Monday saw prices improve, as schedules lifted and grass grows.
"This should only get better," Chris Humphrey of Livestock Mart Auctions said.
With light 2-year steers to $820 and heifers to $617 the market was very buoyant.
Cattle: light 2-year steers $675-$820, 1-year steers $430-$590, good store heifers $588-$617, crossbred rising 1-year heifers $380-$402, bull $835, cows $325-$650.
Sheep: fat lambs $81-$111, store lambs $40-$72, ewes $33-$66.
COUNTIES
Around 390 cattle were yarded at TUAKAU last Thursday and apart from a small lift in steer prices the market remained similar to the previous week, Elders agent Craig Chamberlain said.
Two-year steers in the 450-500kg weight range sold at $1.95-$2.20/kgLW and 350-450kg sorts made $2.02-$2.24/kgLW.
Quality in the yearling steer section was mixed with prices ranging from $2.10/kgLW to $2.50/kgLW. Autumn-born weaner steers earned $420-$440.
The two-year heifer offering was small with most heifers in the 300-400kg range making $1.92-$2.10/kgLW. Yearling heifers ranged from $1.92/kgLW to $2.30/kgLW and autumn-born whiteface weaner heifers returned $350-$380.
Last Wednesday's prime sale drew a yarding of 350 cattle and prices were on par with the previous sale. Heavy steers, 650kg-plus, sold at $2.10-$2.18/kgLW and medium steers, 550-650kg, earned $2.08-$2.22/kgLW. Trade-type steers fetched $2.05-$2.12/kgLW.
Few heifers were yarded, but heavy heifers, 550kg-plus, sold at $2.07-$2.11/kgLW with trade types making $2.05-$2.10/kgLW.
Beef and boner cows continue to sell strongly. Heavy beef cows returned $1.68-$1.75/kgLW and heavy Friesian cows earned $1.48-$1.61/kgLW. Medium Friesians made $1.39-$1.45/kgLW and even lighter cows were trading at $1.32-$1.45/kgLW.
Chamberlain said prices at last Monday's sheep sale were strong, particularly in the prime lamb section where heavy lambs sold at $120-$136. Medium lambs made $95-$115 and lighter lambs $85-$95.
A small offering of store lambs also sold well, with good lambs making $85-$95 and medium types $78-$85. Heavy prime ewes sold up to $75 and medium ewes made $61-$68.
BAY OF PLENTY
A small yarding attracted excellent prices, especially for yearlings, at RANGIURU.
"The cattle aren't there," was PGG Wrightson agent Stu Langdon's comment.
Regional buyers drove the market and paid $640 for 303kg whiteface steers, $3.14/kgLW, $555 for 172kg same, $3.21/kgLW and most yearling steers made $3.04/kgLW and better while heifers sold around $2.75-$2.92/kgLW.
There was also a good enquiry for feeder calves with good whiteface bulls fetching $135-$160 and heifers, $105-$140. Heavier older steers brought $1005-$1295, $1.97-$2.23/kgLW. A handful of 366kg R2 steers sold at $800, $2.18/kgLW.
Best heifers, at 488kg brought $1020, $2.09/kgLW and a reasonable entry of heifers weighing better than 400kg made $790-$965, $1.83-$2.15/kgLW. A single prime bull, 700kg made $1660, $2.37/kgLW and solid prime heifers fetched $790-$1010, $1.95-$2.13/kgLW.
Heavy cows sold at $1150-$1200, $1.75-$1.84/kgLW and boner cows, over 400kg, brought $530-$680, $1.29-$1.49/kgLW, very light selling at $345-$390, $1.13-$1.15/kgLW. Conditioned lambs made a top price of $103 and averaged $75.80. Trade ewes made to $70.
WAIKATO
FRANKTON presented one of the smallest yardings of prime cattle for a long time last week.
A report from Allied Farmers described the market for ox as steady at recent good rates but there was a keener tone to the market for heifers while both prime and boner cows went well.
Best ox, at 610kg and 645kg made $1293 and $1367, $2.12/kgLW. Lots weighing over 500kg returned $1060-$1157, $2.12-$2.19/kgLW and $979-$1020 was paid for others weighing less than 500kg, $2.08-$2.10/kgLW.
Two solid lots of heifers at 505kg and 570kg traded at $1161 and $1197, $2.10-$2.30/ kgLW and 460-485kg heifers made $1009-$1071, $2.19-$2.21/kgLW. $852-$967 secured the lighter heifers, $1.90-$2.15/kgLW. $1003 was paid for a 650kg prime cow, $1.59/kgLW while other prime cows fetched $705-$874, $1.50-$1.68/kgLW. Friesian boner cows weighing more than 500kg sold at $736-$796, $1.60-$1.68/kgLW and 445kg Jersey cross cows made $663, $1.49/kgLW.
In the sheep pens top money is being tendered for heavy lambs, the best fetching $110-$135 and medium weights sold at $90. Store lambs are following the trend with good selling at $85, mediums at $73 and small at $50. Heavy ewes made to $80 with $30-$55 buying plainer sorts.
Cattle with condition and young cattle continue to attract strong bidding at Frankton. Autumn-born lines and feeder calves sold especially well.
Whiteface bulls were preferred in the calf pens with good lots making to $240, mediums $180 and even small sold at $100-$120. Friesian bull calves made $120, $70-$90 and small, $30-50 while whiteface heifers fetched $130, $85 and $30-$45. Autumn-born steers, all under 200kg returned $400-$480 for beef bred, $2.50-$3.17/kgLW and 170kg Friesian steers went at $332, $1.95/kgLW. Autumn-born bulls, all under 150kg made $355-$420, $2.54-$3.17/kgLW while heifers sold at $322-$432, $2.30-$2.76/kgLW. A reasonable number of R2 steers were put up with $1000 paid for 451kg whiteface, $2.22/kgLW. Medium weight Angus steers, just over 400kg made $895-$960, $2.19-$2.21/kgLW. $630-$695 bought R2 steers weighing less than 300kg, $2.35-$2.37/kgLW. R3 heifers, 306-368kg brought $650-$760, $2.01-$2.13/kgLW and a pen of 232kg R2 heifers sold at $545, $2.35/kgLW. Good R1 heifers 263kg made $495, $1.88/kgLW. $335-$425 took other R1 heifers, $2.36-$2.39/kgLW.

There was a sharp lift in prime cattle prices at STRATFORD on Tuesday.

POVERTY BAY
Sheep prices kept vendors warm even if the sun did not shine at MATAWHERO where close to 2000 total sheep were penned.
A short entry of 833 store lambs did contain some good quality ewe lambs and the best of these made $82.50-$88.50, $2.41-$2.72.kgLW.
Mixed sex lambs with weight made to $91, $2.56/kgLW and all bar two small lots sold at better than $71.
A good sized offering of 450 prime ewes saw values maintained with heavy trade ewes making $84-$91 and good cutting 2-tooth ewes, $86-$92.
Only 52 prime lambs were entered and the best made $100-$128 with a few at $86-$99,
Good mixed age ewes, SIL, fetched $93.25 and 2-tooth ewes, same, made $92.50.
Store ewes followed the trend set by prime ewes and traded at $57-$78.
The total yarding was 1972 sheep.
HAWKE'S BAY
An excellent yarding of store lambs with many lines in very good condition drew enthusiastic bidding from a good bench and values rose by $4-$5 at STORTFORD LODGE, PGG Wrightson agent Vern Wiggins reported.
A small line of very heavy ewe lambs topped the sale at $109 with other good ewe lambs fetching $86.60-$95.20.
The best of the male lambs drew final bids of $92-$99 with shorn lines favoured. Medium lambs, whether ewes or males brought $76-$79 and there were small sheep at $57-$60. Just two small lots of breeding ewes were entered, SIL making $95 and RWR $66. Little lots of ewes with lambs at foot sold at $63-$68 all-counted.
Through the rostrum the very small offering of just 145 cattle sold quite strongly.
Good R3 steers made $1220 for 547kg Angus-cross, $2.23/kgLW and 478kg exotic steers fetched $1040, $2.18/kgLW. A pen of 433kg R2 steers made $920, $2.12/kgLW with another lot selling at $515, $1.97/kgLW.
Most of the R2 heifers were sold at $2-$2.11/kgLW, making $615-$680 and R1 heifers traded at $560-$595 for lines over 230kg, $2-$2.42/kgLW while 164kg heifers made $385, $2.35/kgLW.
MANAWATU
About 18,000 head were on offer at the Feilding hogget fair on Wednesday in what was an absolutely brilliant sale, Dan Flanagan of PGG Wrightson said. Everything sold well, he said.
Much of the yarding was of shorn males in the mid-30kgs range and fetched $2.70/kgLW plus. Even those 28-30kg fetched $80.
Good ewe hoggets for breeding sold well with those in the mid-30kgs range going for more than $100.
The very best of the lambs on offer at Feilding last Friday sold for $115, Elders' Damien Clarke reported.
There was good demand from buyers for the quality end of the lamb offering, with local Manawatu and Rangitikei buyers being supported by Hawke's Bay interest and even a buyer from Blenheim, Clarke said.
Very good male lambs made $95-$100, good males $82.$90, and medium males $70-$75.
Best of the ewe lambs made $88-$95, good ewe lambs $78-$85, medium ewe lambs $68-$75, small $50-65 and even very small ewe lambs finding a home for $35- $45.
There was a strong market for cattle at Feilding, with interest show in all lines, Darrin Holm said.
The best of the two-year steers made $2.15-$2.22/kgLW, with medium lines $2.10-$2.20/kgLW. Two year heifers made to $2.00/kgLW for the best, with others around $1.90-$1.95/kgLW.
Yearling steers made $2.80-$3.10/kgLW for the lighter lines with keen interest being shown in yearling heifers with the best making $2.30-$2.40/kgLW and medium sorts $2.20-$2.30/kgLW.
"All round it was a very good sale," Holm said.
CANTERBURY
There was a medium yarding of prime sheep and lambs at CANTERBURY PARK on Tuesday with heavy prime lambs again taking a $3-$4 lift, PGG Wrightson livestock manager Shane Dickson reported.
The top butcher lambs made up to $148.
Ewes remained steady.
Prime cattle took a 3-5c per kg lift with the best traditional steers up to $2.19/kgLW.
Heifers enjoyed a similar lift with the top end up to $2.10/kgLW.
MID CANTERBURY
A smaller yarding of prime stock was offered at TINWALD with all categories having a good, solid sale.
Top prime lambs, in particular, fetched up to $164, PGG Wrightson livestock
representative Emmett Sparrow reported.
Good heavy prime lambs returned $135-$155, medium lambs $110-$125 and lighter types $90-$105.
Prime ewes sold similar to the previous week with heavy types earning $90-$105, medium $70-$85 and lighter ewes $55-$68.
Good forward store lambs had a strong sale lifting $10/head on the previous week with top sales up to $90. Medium stores earned $70-$80 while smaller lambs were in the market at $60-$65.
SOUTH CANTERBURY
A small prime stock yarding all round saw TEMUKA with one of its smaller sales this year.
Several lines of good quality store lambs boosted values in the store lamb market and the first of the season's bobby calf sales kicked off, PGG Wrightson livestock manager Joe Higgins reported.
Good, forward, well-framed store lambs from the Chathams topped the store lamb market at $104 while medium types earned $68-$79 and smaller lambs $50-$68.
Prime lambs sold at similar values to the previous week with heavy lambs returning $125-$155, medium $105-$124 and lighter lambs $90-$104.
One-shear prime ewes had a good sale with heavy types fetching $90-$110, medium $80-$89 and lighter ewes $67-$77.
Heavy adult butcher ewes lifted $2/head selling from $100-$106 while medium types earned $81-$97, lighter ewes $70-$77 and stores $51-$68.
The prime cattle sale saw steers strengthen 3c/kg while heifers lifted 5c/kg. Steers 600-750kg returned $2-$2.05/kgLW, 480-600kg $1.90-$2.06/kgLW, 400-480kg $1.85-$1.96/kgLW and dairy types 500-650kg $1.85-$1.98/kgLW. Heifers 500-650kg earned $1.89-$2.07/kgLW, 450-500kg $1.86-$2.06/kgLW, 380-450kg $1.80-$1.86/kgLW and dairy types 380-500kg $1.50-$1.70/kgLW.
Bulls 500-890kg fetched $1.80-$1.85/kgLW with lighter types earning $1.50-$1.70/kgLW. Heavy cows 500-750kg realised $1.12-$1.23/kgLW, 400-500kg $1.08-$1.16/kgLW and dairy types 500-750kg $1.05-$1.15 with poorer sorts selling from 65c-$1/kgLW.
The first of season's bobby calf sales saw beef-cross bull calves selling from $40-$110 while beef-cross heifers earned $40-$85. Friesian bull calves returned $20-$50 and crossbred and poorer types $5-$15.
OTAGO
Prime lambs eased by up to $4 a head on heavyweight lines but the rest sold on par at BALCLUTHA on Wednesday, Barry Osborne of PGG Wrightson, Milton, reported.
Prime ewes sold well with a good quality yarding offered.
Heavy lambs $124-$132, medium $108-$121, light $90-$105. Good quality 2-tooths $86, medium $75, light $62. Heavy ewes $88-$100, medium $75-$84, light $64-$74. Lower condition ewes $46. Heavy local trade rams $69, medium $52.
A very small yarding of store lambs sold well on limited demand. Top woolly lambs $83.50, medium $69, light $52. Top shorn lambs $88, medium $77, light $59.
A big yarding of store cattle sold on par with recent sales. The good quality offering met very good demand. SOUTHLAND
A small yarding of prime cattle sold on a good market at LORNEVILLE on Tuesday.
Medium heifers 410-455kg $1.70-$1.80/kgLW, medium steers 350-390kg $1.65-$1.85/kgLW, good cows 550kg $1.20-$1.30/kgLW, medium cows 400-500kg $0.90-$1.10/kgLW.
There was a small yarding of store cattle. Medium Hereford-cross 1-year steers 232kg $475, medium Friesian 1-year steers 201kg $345.
Among the bobby calves there was good demand for top bulls but limited demand for poorer types. Top Friesian bulls $80, medium Friesian bulls $30-$50, medium Angus bulls $60, small Angus bulls $10, crossbred bulls and heifers $5, medium Angus heifers $30, small Angus heifers $15.
A small yarding of prime sheep met with firm demand with prices on a par with the previous week.
Heavy lambs $125-$140, medium $110-$120, light $88-$108. Good quality 2-tooths $72-$89.50, medium $59-$69, light $37-$39, Heavy ewes $75-$99.50, medium $63-$72, light $48-$60. Lower condition ewes $40. Heavy local trade rams $50, medium $40, light $30.

All stock was in good demand in a short yarding at CHARLTON on Thursday.
