Lambs reach $160 as prices hold up

23-08-2010 | Not Specified

Strong prices for both sheep and cattle were being gained around the country over the last week.
Prime lamb numbers and prices were up at Canterbury Park with the top price of $160 being a $12 a head lift, PGG Wrightson livestock manager Shane Dickson said.
And prime lambs made the same top price at Temuka, South Canterbury PGG Wrightson livestock manager Joe Higgins reported.
Wellsford sellers had a very successful time at the annual yearling cattle fair with good demand even though the beasts lacked weight, PGG Wrightson agent Bernie McGahan reported.
Just down the road Chris Humphrey at Livestock Mart Auctions says there weren't enough good cattle to go round at Pukekohe as confidence returned to the market.
Gary and Sandra Engelen reported a very strong market at Stratford with both prime and store cattle hitting new highs.
Enthusiastic buyers opened their purses at Wairoa with 15 lines of R2 steers making more than $1000.
Sheep prices are also holding value and in Balclutha an exceptional line of prime lambs sold at up to $154 a head, Barry Osborne of PGG Wrightson said while Emmett Sparrow of PGG Wrightson reported $158 for the same at Tinwald.
At Lorneville most prime sheep were up $3-$5 a head.

NORTHLAND
The market at KAIKOHE was still reasonably strong and on a par with previous weeks though prices lifted a little for the bigger steers among the 500-head yarding, Vaughan Vujcich of PGG Wrightson reported.
The best of the 2-year Angus and Angus cross steers fetched $2.20-$2.28/kgLW with whitehead and Hereford-cross going for $2.05-$2.18/kgLW. R1 Angus, Angus-Simmental and Hereford-Friesian steers made $2.35-$2.45/kgLW with light yearling beef-cross bulls at $2.05-$2.10/kgLW.
The better 2-year Hereford-cross and exotic-cross heifers made $2-$2.04/kgLW with lesser sorts at $1.88-$1.94/kgLW. Good Angus yearling heifers made $2.20-$2.25/kgLW with whiteface at $2.10/kgLW with beef-cross, Simmental, exotics and Hereford-Angus at $2-$2.04/kgLW. Lighter empty and RWB cows made $1.34-$1.60/kgLW.
The annual yearling cattle fair at WELLSFORD last Monday was very strong despite the lack of stock carrying much weight, Bernie McGahan of PGG Wrightson said.
There was a lot of dairy-beef among the 900 cattle on offer but little traditional or exotic cattle. A lot of the cattle were much lighter than last year because of the drought last summer and autumn with only 10 pens over 250kg, McGahan said.
Buyers were predominantly from the north and from south Auckland.
Any well-bred cattle over 250kg sold well with the better steers 230-250kg going for $2.33-$2.50/kgLW. Better coloured black or red whiteface steers 160-190kg sold at $3/kgLW and a line of Hereford-Friesian at 160kg sold for $3.65/kgLW.
A couple of very nice pens of Hereford-Friesian heifers sold for $612 a head. The few heifers over 200kg sold for $2.10-$2.12/kgLW. Light dairy-beef heifers 160-190kg sold for $2.20$2.25/kgLW and yearling Friesian bulls sold at $2.25/kgLW.
McGahan said the grass is starting to growth in the north now and farmers will be right for the rest of spring.
At Tuesday's prime cattle sale at WELLSFORD ox 600-700kg sold for $2.29/kgLW and other cattle 500-600kg at $2.20-$2.25/kgLW. Heavy prime cows were at $1.60-$1.70/kgLW and light manufacturing cows at $1.10-$1.15/kgLW. Prime trade heifers 390-450kg sold for $2.18/kgLW.
In the sheep section prime lambs reached $100, store lambs $85-$92 and ewes $65-$75.

AUCKLAND
The cattle market has really taken off with prime cattle in huge demand and store cattle - well there are just not enough good ones to go around, Chris Humphrey of Livestock Mart Auctions said after the PUKEKOHE sale on Saturday August 14.
"This situation has been in the making for months and will take many months to come right so demand will continue along these strong trends for some time to come."
Best prime steers $1130-$1625, other 2-year steers $950-$1070, very light steers $670-$750, very small crossbred steers $200-$390, medium prime heifers $1100, store heifers $585-$750, medium crossbred R1 heifers $380-$420, bulls $720-$1290.
There were many more keen buyers at KUMEU last Monday than in recent weeks, Humphrey reported.
He attributed the upsurge to good recent grass growth and a growing confidence in the cattle market.
"This will continue and get better as spring approaches," he said.
Cattle: light 18-month steers $705, R1 steers $360-$482, store heifers $540-$632, boner cows $1080.
Sheep: fat lambs $84-$113, store lambs $51-$74.

COUNTIES
Cold and wet weather at TUAKAU last Thursday didn't dampen the spirits of a good bench of buyers whose strong bidding ensured the market remained firm, PGG Wrightson agent Roy Allen said.
A medium yarding of 565 cattle was on offer, including some forward order two-year whitehead steers, 480-500kg, which traded at $2.19-$2.23/kgLW. Whitehead steers at 415-430kg made $2.20/kgLW and while lighter-conditioned two-year Friesian steers, 312-340kg, sold well at $1.98-$2.35/kgLW, those with horns were discounted. Quality Angus-Friesian yearling steers, 257kg, earned $685 and whitehead yearlings at 227kg returned $630. Later-born Hereford steers, 157kg, made $550 and well-marked yearling Friesian bulls, 180-220kg, sold at $500-$565.

BAY OF PLENTY
Buyers from Rotorua to South Auckland competed for the 650 cattle at RANGIURU. Yearlings made up the majority of the entry with some good quality lines and very good prices resulted, said Neill Penman of PGG Wrightson.
Warm, spring-like conditions added to the enthusiasm.
Very good yearling steers made to $670 but lesser sorts were bought at $255-$300.
This showed in the prices which varied from $2.10-$3.18/kgLW.

Very few sheep were penned. Good lambs went at $119 and a few ewes with lambs made $40-$48.
The August TAUPO Cattle Sale had about half of last year's numbers yarded, Shane Scott of Central Livestock reported.
Of the just under 400 cattle the feature was a line of 280 mainly 3-year dairy-beef cross and Friesian steers.
They were in store condition with frame and attracted buyers from Hawke's Bay and Waikato as well as locally. The beef-cross types made up to $2.25/kgLW for a line of 425kg Angus type with the rest of the Friesian, Hereford and beef-cross types ranging from $2.10-$2.17/kgLW with weights 440-521kg.

WAIKATO
Buyers were offered a slightly bigger choice of cattle at FRANKTON, PGG Wrightson agent Lynn Collins said.
Yearling steers were in strong demand with whiteface steers, under 200kg, selling to as much as $3.11-$3.51/kgLW. The same breed but weighing 245-255kg sold at $625-$635, $2.49-$2.55/kgLW and others weighing 22-224 kg returned $575-$615, $2.75-$2.90. Angus steers at 218kg made $625, $2.79/kgLW.

POVERTY BAY
Spring fever seemed to pervade the sheep market at MATAWHERO where the prime market rose to $102 for butcher ewes and $141 for very heavy lambs.
Old timers could not recall higher prices. The demand for ewe mutton reflected in values for store ewes which rose to $89 for reasonably well covered lots and even quite plain still made $70-$78. Close to 1400 store lambs came forward and any line, regardless of sex, that carried any condition sold extremely well.
Good lambs with meat fetched $89.50-$98.
A reasonable line of 177 ewe lambs weighed at 32.5kg brought $92.25 at $2.82/kgLW and most lines were $2.45-$2.63/kgLW.
Some very small lambs, around 20kg, sold at $31-$40 but they were hard and stunted.
Line-size was again small with just three numbering more than 100.
Two small lines of ewes and lambs made $50 and $54.20 all-counted and the total yarding was just 1789.

HAWKE'S BAY

A good bench of buyers from Hawke's Bay, Feilding, the Central Plateau and local areas lined up for a magnificent offering of over 1300 cattle at WAIROA.
The chance to buy well-bred Angus steers in big lines bred on hill country does not occur frequently across the North Island and with more than 1000 head of Angus or Angus-Hereford R2 steers the buyers opened their purses.
The cattle had wintered well with the top lines in quite high condition. Similar R1 steers also generated an enthusiastic response although there were only 250 head on display. The demand for the R2 steers is illustrated by the fact that 15 lines sold at $1002-$1070, $2.10-$2.29/kgLW and a further nine lots returned $952-$995, $2.21-$2.26/kgLW with a notable evenness in the CPK rate.

A top line of Angus R1 steers fetched $870 and went to Hawke's Bay interests while other very good R1 steers made $705-$750, an estimated $2.46-$2.77/kgLW and smaller sorts went at $505-$580. A few R1 heifers made $415-$500 and medium R2 heifers made $655. (Note - No scales at Wairoa)
