Prices soar on spring madness

30-08-2010 | Not Specified

Prime lamb prices hit $174 at Temuka last week, PGG Wrightson livestock manager Joe Higgins said.
And at Tinwald were not far behind with the best reaching $170, according to PGG Wrightson agent Emmett Sparrow.
Spring madness broke out in Northland as prices soared for all categories of sheep at Wellsford, according to PGG Wrightson agent Grant Pallister.
And he and others are reporting good prices for cattle as demand is ahead of supply. Price around the country have mostly firmed.
Chris Humphrey of Livestock Mart Auctions in Auckland believes the demand is likely to increase.
As feed improves demand is growing in Bay of Plenty, said Rod Kamphorst of PGG Wrightson and Allied Farmers reported record highs for cattle at Frankton where the sheep market boomed and lambs hit $140.

NORTHLAND
There was a good strong market with a yarding of 560 head at KAIKOHE on Wednesday with a lift in prices for yearling steers and heifers, PGG Wrightson agent Vaughan Vujcich said.
"It was a jump up on the week before."
Vujcich says ground conditions are good and with schedules quite high they could supply more cattle if they were available and with the northern spring fairs coming up in two to three weeks they could do with more cattle coming on.
In a light yarding of 2-year steers Hereford-cross, Murray Grey and Friesian made $2-$2.10/kgLW. Nicely bred yearling Charolais and Angus steers made $2.80-$2.95/kgLW with heavier Charolais, Hereford-cross and exotic-cross making $2.40-$2.50/kgLW.
Yearling Simmental bulls made $2.40-$2.56/kgLW and yearling beef-cross and Friesian-cross $2.30-$2.40/kgLW. 2-year Angus heifers made $2-$2.04/kgLW with 2-year dairy-beef heifers at $1.95-$2. Medium to lighter yearling Charolais and Angus heifers made $2.35-$2.55/kgLW with heavier sorts at $2.18-$2.20/kgLW. RWB Friesian and beef-cross cows made $1.54-$1.64/kgLW.
Demand was high for cattle at WELLSFORD on Monday but numbers were lacking, Grant Pallister of PGG Wrightson said.
And quality was down for yearling cattle following the drought in the north, he reported.
Two-year steers 450-500kg, $1.87-$2.09/kgLW, 350-450kg $2.05-$2.19/kgLW, 300-350kg, $2.13-$2.20/kgLW, 2-year heifers 350-400kg $2.06-$2.09/kgLW, 300-350kg $1.85-$2.02/kgLW, 1-year steers 115-200kg $2.25-$3.43/kgLW, 1-year heifers, 100-140kg $2.68-$2.75/kgLW.
There was another buoyant prime cattle and sheep sale at WELLSFORD on Tuesday with the shortage of cattle starting to hit home, Pallister said.
And there was spring madness as prices soared for all categories of sheep, he said.
Heavy steers $2.27-$2.37/kgLW, medium $2.12-$2.19/kgLW, light $1.81-$$2.12/kgLW. Heavy heifers $2.15-$2.20/kgLW, medium $2.17-$2.19/kgLW. Heavy cows $1.42-$1.62/kgLW, medium $1.28-$1.36/kgLW, light $1.10-$1.17/kgLW. No bulls.

AUCKLAND
With a smaller grading of cattle on offer at PUKEKOHE on Saturday August 12 prices were very strong indeed, Chris Humphrey of Livestock Mart Auctions reported.
Demand was extra good for good quality.
"With the weather starting to warm up, grass is growing really well and demand for cattle looks likely to increase even more," he said.

The recent stronger trend continued at KUMEU last Monday aided by kinder weather and keen buyers, Chris Humphrey of Livestock Mart Auctions reported.
"Cattle prices look set continue strongly for some time," he said.
